First, if they contribute to his legal defense, it might be taken as an admission that they received the information from him. Obtaining that admission would convict him. <br /><br />Also, their charter may require that their funds be spent in certain ways (so they shouldn't have put out the word that they could support Manning). The two organizations that have provided legal defense for defendants like Manning have been The Center for Constitutional Rights and The National Lawyers Guild. <br /><br />I do think that a cult of personality is developing around Assange. However, it has its upside. As long as he's the lightning rod, as long as the death threats and the attention of the USG is focused on him, the people who do the actual work may be able to work on.
